Study Management Series
Part 1: Make Your Study Interesting
Every student has been trapped in the throes of boredom and frustration while trying to study. When we find ourselves thinking about study in such a negative way, most of us will just procrastinate and spend the last few days leading up to the due date cramming in a manic fashion.
Well, contrary to popular belief, study doesn’t have to boring and monotonous. There are ways to be creative with your studying and make it a manageable part of your educational vocation.
Here are some ideas to break the tedium of your regular study schedule:
- Record your notes onto a portable note-taker/iPod etc and go for a bike ride while listening to your notes.
- Get together with other students and take turns at presenting and/or role playing a certain study topic.
- Set small goals within a major project and reward yourself for them. For example, “after I finish the first 10 slides of my presentation I can go for ice-cream.”
- Search websites such as youtube for lectures on similar topics and get a point of view from a different lecturer or industry expert.
- Study with good natural lighting, well regulated room temperature and comfortable seats. You’ll be surprised how much a comfortable environment will improve your overall study mood!
- Have some humorous prose or a good joke permanently attached to your study materials. Have a good laugh every time you sit down to study to put your self in a positive mindframe before you even start.
By being creative and trying new and interesting approaches to studying, you will find your study becomes less of a burden and study may even become something you can look forward to!
