Arkom is a 28 year old student from Thailand. Prior to studying with ICAE he completed a Bachelor in Business English at Bangkok University and has worked as a Teppanyaki Chef in the USA.
Why did you decide to study and in work Australia at the Casino School?
"I choose to study the Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management because I want to work in International Hotels and Casinos, not only in Australia but all over the world. I like to travel a lot and enjoy meeting people from different cultures and back grounds."
As part of ICAE’s study and work in Australia initiation, first semester students were given the opportunity to complete two weeks of hands-on hospitality experience at SKYCITY Darwin. Students were placed in all areas of the establishment such as food and beverage service, banquets, bars and housekeeping.
As Arkom had already worked in numerous food and beverage jobs before, Arkom asked is he could undertake his work experience in the house keeping department.
"Working in house keeping is a lot of hard work. There is so much effort put into the every detail of the room but at the end of the day it is very rewarding."
After participating in work experience, Arkom secured paid employment with SKYCITY and is currently completing his industry placement there.
"I am very grateful for the opportunities the college gave me. The work experience helped me develop new skills and got me a job working in the hospitality industry.
All the staff at the college are very helpful and friendly. They made me feel very welcome when I first arrived. The lecturers are very informative and provide interesting and interactive classes."
What is your favourite part of studying in Darwin?
"I like the cultural diversity, not only between the students but the staff too. There are staff and students from all over the world, New Zealand, the Philippines, India and England just to name a few.
It's challenging working with people from different cultural backgrounds, but that is what I like. It a huge learning curve for me working with people whom have different ideals and values to me. Every day I learn something new from my fellow peers at school and at work, its very rewarding."
After he completes and studies, Arkom would like to stay in Australia and work in Hotels and Casinos all over the country.
What would you say to other international students looking to study and work in Australia?
"I would recommend this course to anyone with a passion for the hospitality industry and if you do enrol in the course, take every opportunity the college offers you with professionalism and integrity.
The college offers the students with so many great opportunities. You need to be prepared for new learning experiences and have fun with your studies. I have really enjoyed my first semester here at the college."
